Stephen F. Quill, founder of Ecological Fibers, Inc., passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023. Steve started out at Colonial Press in Clinton MA after serving in the military in the late 1950’s. He moved on to purchasing at American Book Stratford Press NY for a brief time, returning home to start Ecological Fibers in 1972. His life’s journey was truly representative of the American Dream.
Coming from a blue-collar background, Steve built Ecological from the ground up – through hard work and innovation. His pioneering vision changed our industry for the better. He believed and fought for years to prove that environmentally sound products could exceed the quality expectations of historically solvent-based goods. With his employee’s health foremost in his mind he pushed to remove all harmful chemicals from our operations decades before any regulations were created. These efforts were recognized by the EPA through an Earth Day Award for the reduction of hazardous waste in our industry and carried Ecological through its now 50 years of growth and success.
Privately, Steve donated time and money supporting charitable foundations committed to improving the environment and protecting and expanding wilderness habitats including Ducks Unlimited, Nashua River Watershed, and The Ruffed Grouse Society and was a founding member of the Massachusetts Outdoor Heritage Foundation.
Steve was adamant that everyone deserved respect. He was committed to doing the right thing, and believed that prosperity was to be shared. Without seeking any recognition, Steve continuously donated anonymously to funds aimed at providing higher education for underprivileged children, and medical research. His unwavering loyalty and support for his employees made him a leader who inspired devotion.
He was truly one of the good guys and will be sorely missed.
Steve Quill’s life was a life worth celebrating.
