Each year more than 300 million tons of plastic is manufactured; with over half intended for single-use application. While recycling offers some relief, plastic waste totaling more than half the global population ends up in landfills or polluting our waterways, beaches, and open areas.
Ecological Fibers prides itself on how we approach our manufacturing processes. When it comes to the environment, we’ve never settled for the easy solution if it was detrimental to the earth. When we realized the potential health ramifications of using solvents, we didn’t reduce the number of solvents we used, we removed solvents altogether, becoming the first covering materials company to do so. Now, we’ve set our eyes on plastics.
For the past few years, Ecological Fibers has been working tirelessly to create a truly plastic-free coating. Answering this problem was not as simple as you would think. What is plastic? What can be defined as plastic? What is the best solution possible for this problem?
While others tackle the problem by simply re-defining the term “plastic” to benefit their product limitations, we decided to go a step further and develop coatings that utilize absolutely Zero Petroleum-based components. We didn’t want to settle for 100% Plastic Free, we wanted to be 100% organic.
Defining Plastic
It’s not as simple as you might think. Some define it as anything containing PVC, others as having any number of certain chemicals or ingredients which are petroleum based. Making a product that we could truly label 100% Plastic Free means covering all bases and creating a coating containing absolutely zero refined petroleum.
Defining Biodegradable
A term broadly and loosely used in our industry, claiming that most any material will break down and return to a natural state eventually. In reality, almost everything is biodegradable given enough time. However, understanding the global environmental crisis demands real world timelines. Their Organic composition means that Rainbow® 3 Plastic Free products will decompose quickly and safely, without leaving behind solvent residue or micro-plastics.
How did we do it?
For over two years Ecological chemists, engineers, and manufacturing specialists worked in concert through exhaustive trialing and testing to create a fully Organic Coating that is 100% Plastic Free, without risking the quality and ease of use these products are known for. In late 2020 we realized our goal, through advanced coating methods. Ecological Fibers developed a formula using solely organic all natural compounds to create safe, decorative coatings, that could handle market requirements of durability, flexibility, moisture resistance, and the ability to accept decoration.
